The CIJ inkjet printer applies a certain pressure to the ink in the system. This can be achieved by controlling an internal gear pump or diaphragm pump, or by supplying a compressed air source from the outside of the machine. The pressurized ink then passes through the nozzle. As it does so, ink dots are produced. These dots are charged through the charging slot, so that each ink droplet forming the code carries a different charge. Each ink droplet with a specific charge then flies through the high voltage electric field generated inside the print head. The amount of charge on an ink droplet determines its deflection in an electric field.

Charged ink dots are ejected from the nozzle and applied to different positions on the surface of the product, forming various required text, patterns, and other markings. Uncharged ink droplets do not deflect, fall inside the print head, and return to the ink system.

Because ink spraying is continuous, the machine is called a continuous inkjet printer, abbreviated as CIJ. Due to its principle, it can only print 2 - 15CM characters or patterns, hence the name small character inkjet printer.
